Greek Crisis Brings New Opportunities for Investment

Omaira Gill notes that while the Greek government scrambles to repay its debts “behind the scenes investors continue to eye Greece with interest.”

“If investors are looking to make cheap purchases, then Greece is the place,” the Abu Dhabi-based reporter wrote in The National.

The article noted that veteran investors, such as Mark Mobius fund manager at Franklin Templeton Investments consider Greece to be a viable investment option. “From a long-term perspective, there is an opportunity to invest in companies that are undervalued and provide good upside,” he said.

“There is a belief that if the government is not able to pay its debts, then the entire financial sector will be dissolved. However, if you look at the balance sheets of a number of financial institutions in Greece, you will see that only a small part of their assets are in Greek government debt. As the economic recovery takes place in Greece, the financial institutions will then stand to benefit,” Mobius adds.

Omaira Gill noted that the American investor is not the only one who encourages investors to see Greece as a viable investment option and goes on to include interview of several investors who have chosen to place their money in Greece amidst the economic crisis.
